Read on to learn how Idea Surgery has helped my nonprofit clients create a strategic plan in under 90 minutes.

What Is Idea Surgery?
Idea Surgery is not your typical brainstorming session. It’s a hands-on, facilitated experience where leaders and teams come together to dissect ideas, identify priorities, and create actionable strategies. Idea Surgery can also be a powerful 1:1 coaching tool to help executives untangle the thoughts in your brain.
This interactive session designed to help leaders visualize their organization’s top priorities, identify challenges, and create actionable solutions. Through collaborative brainstorming, we work together to dissect your ideas, organize them into actionable strategies, and create a path forward. Think of it as strategic planning, but with a creative, human-centered approach that centers your energy and vision.
The Idea Surgery Process
Idea Surgery was born out of necessity. As a funder, I discovered organizations struggled to create a logic model and strategic plan to demonstrate how they would use millions of grant dollars. I needed to create a methodology for people to create consensus on a joint vision from the disparate thoughts in their heads.
That’s when Idea Surgery was born to help leaders with four easy steps:
- Discovery: We start by understanding where you are today. This includes your vision, mission, and any existing strategies.
- Visualization: Using tools like whiteboards or collaborative software, we map your future and where you’re heading. We discuss your ideas, challenges, and goals. This step is all about brainstorming and getting everything out in the open.
- Prioritization: Together, we determine which ideas and initiatives align most closely with your organization’s vision and capacity. By focusing on a limited number of priorities we can ensure you have the energy to get the work done.
- Action Plan Development: The session concludes with a clear action plan that outlines next steps, resources, and accountability measures.
Over the years of completing Idea Surgery sessions for community groups, foundations, nonprofits, and businesses the methodology has proven results for strategy development, achieving clarity, and building consensus.
