Why Nonprofits Struggle to Align Vision and Growth
Nonprofit leaders are visionaries driven by the desire to make a lasting impact in their communities. But when it comes to executing that vision, you might be facing the reality of limited resources, overwhelming opportunities, and the pressures of burnout. This challenge is why the SAVEE Framework was created: to help purpose-driven leaders make intentional, aligned decisions that fuel sustainable growth.
As a social impact strategist and nonprofit coach, I’ve seen firsthand how transformational this framework can be for organizations. The SAVEE helps leaders stay grounded in their mission while navigating growth.
What is the SAVEE Framework?
The SAVEE Framework is a decision-making tool that ensures every opportunity aligns with your mission, capacity, and vision for the future. It consists of five guiding principles:
- S: Serve — Does this opportunity align with your mission and serve your target population?
- A: Assess — What resources (time, money, staff) will this require? Do you have the capacity to follow through?
- V: Vision — Does this move your organization closer to achieving your long-term goals?
- E: Economics — Is this financially viable? Does it support sustainable funding?
- E: Energy — Does your team have the energy and bandwidth to execute this effectively?
Each principle acts as a checkpoint, helping you evaluate if an opportunity is worth pursuing.
Why Alignment Matters in Nonprofit Growth
Chasing every funding opportunity or new initiative can lead to overextension, diluted impact, and a departure from your mission. Alignment ensures that every effort contributes to your organization’s overall purpose and goals.
For example, one of my coaching clients leads a nonprofit dedicated to fostering connections through the Kiswahili language.
During a session I thought her how to apply the SAVEE Framework to stop feeling overwhelmed by competing priorities making it difficult to know where to focus her energy. By applying SAVEE, she learned how to prioritize community events, build meaningful partnerships, and create a roadmap for sustainable growth.
The result? This Spring she held her first event thanks to the clarity, confidence, and alignment with her nonprofit’s mission gained during our coaching sessions. Here’s a photo of us at her event this Spring.

Benefits of Using the SAVEE Framework
The SAVEE framework can help:
- Reduce overwhelm by narrowing your focus to aligned opportunities.
- Help you make confident, mission-driven decisions.
- Ensure every effort contributes to your long-term goals.
- Optimize your use of resources, time, and energy.
Let’s explore how this framework can be put into action to drive meaningful results for your work.
How to Apply the SAVEE Framework in Your Organization
The SAVEE framework can be used to assess organizational alignment to funders or on an individual level to maximize your personal resources.
Here’s how you can start using the SAVEE Framework to guide your personal and organizational decision-making:
Step 1: Start with Your Vision
Revisit your mission and vision statements. Use these as a filter to assess whether an opportunity aligns with your organization’s core purpose. Ask: Does this opportunity bring us closer to the impact we want to create?
Step 2: Assess Opportunities Using SAVEE
Create a checklist or scorecard based on the SAVEE principles. For each opportunity, consider:
- Serve: Will this directly benefit the population or cause you serve?
- Assess: What will it take to implement? Do you have the resources and time?
- Vision: Does this align with your long-term change strategy?
- Economics: Is the return on investment (ROI) worth it?
- Energy: Do you and your team have the bandwidth to deliver?
Step 3: Prioritize and Focus
Once you’ve evaluated multiple opportunities, prioritize those that score highest in alignment. Don’t be afraid to say “no” to things that don’t fit—this allows you to stay focused on what truly matters.
In the past I’ve turned down contracts or decided not to bid on an RFP based on the SAVEE Framework. This confused my sub-contractor, but after a deep analysis it was clear that bidding on an out of alignment contract is more risk than it is worth. By prioritizing things that are in alignment and focusing only on what matters you will save time and energy.
Real-Life Success Stories Using SAVEE
Clients who have implemented SAVEE consistently report:
- Increased clarity in decision-making.
- Improved resource allocation.
- Greater alignment between their daily actions and long-term goals.
For nonprofits the SAVEE framework helps identify major priorities. In the example of my client, her priorities were engaging key community leaders, hosting impactful cultural events, and developing an awareness strategy. These clear priorities made it easier to secure the partnerships needed to move her vision forward.
The event she hosted helped share the Swahili culture with her network including food, fashion, and creating a shared spoken-word experience. Here’s a few photos from the event along with a bit of information about each photo. In 2010, I spent 4 months in Tanzania and learned about many aspects of Swahili culture. This is one of the dynamics that made working with my client such a good experience and I was very happy to see her vision materialize quickly.
SAVEE Helps Assess Partnerships
Partnership development is one of the sustainable strategies I help my clients leverage over time. The SAVEE Framework can be used as a lens to determine if a partner organization’s vision, resources, and momentum are in alignment with yours.
By asking yourself key questions using the SAVEE framework you can benchmark if a partnership is ripe for consideration or might be a headache in the long run.
Your Next Steps to Sustainable Growth
